Sam Perry ‘06 presenting at “Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza 2007″ meeting in Washingon D.C.
Sam has been selected to present at the following conference on behalf of 7to10days.org’s efforts to develop pandemic preparedness initiatives. The citizen pandemic flu education module, on which he has been collaborating with a team of Stanford students and staff, is now being sponsored by INSTEDD, an NGO formed at the initiative of Larry Brilliant with the support of Google.org and others. Extending on the coursework accomplished last year by Scott Klemmer’s CS247 laboratory class on Human Computer Interface and the Stanford GSB Leadership Program, 7to10days.org has also been selected to provide one of three case examples for a team of Stanford senior Public Policy students’ project for Winter Quarter, and 7to10days.org is collaborating on a course headed by Assistant Prof. Bill Behrman in the Stanford Engineering Dept. in the Spring term. Its work continues with local groups such as the Palo Alto Red Ribbon commission on Pandemic Preparedness, as well as seeking to create an international module for preparedness.
There will be a national flu meeting in Washington, DC, on Feb 1-2, entitled “Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza 2007″. The meeting is sponsored by the Infectious Diseases Society of America ( the national association of infectious disease doctors) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and will be attended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Homeland Security, White House pandemic planners, academic medical experts interested in influenza, public health doctors, legislators, and other persons interested in planning for seasonal and pandemic influenza. The meeting will provide an up to date summary of seasonal and pandemic influenza, and approximately half the meeting will be devoted to issues related to pandemic influenza planning. A similar meeting was held last year in Washington, DC, and was viewed as being very successful. The meeting is by invitation only, and provides an opportunity for leaders in different fields to have detailed discussions with colleagues over a topic of mutual interest. Sam has been asked to Chair a session on Planning and Responses of Educational Institutions.
