DV Seminar: Rich Moran

Speaker Bio:
Rich Moran joined Venrock in 2007 and is a partner in the Menlo Park office. Rich is focusing his work place expertise on digital media and software investments and offering assistance to Venrock portfolio companies. He recently served as the Chair of Portal Software until their acquisition by Oracle in 2006 and he currently serves on the Glumobile and Sutura boards. Rich is on the Advisory Board of New Vine Logistics and previously served on the board of R4GS. As a 25 year veteran of Silicon Valley, Rich’s career spans Atari through Accenture. His consultancy includes News Corporation, Sega, Apple, SBC, Hewlett Packard, and Electronic Arts as clients.

Rich is an expert on organization change and has written five best selling books, including his latest, Nuts, Bolts and Jolts and is a member of the Silicon Valley branch of the National Association of Corporate Directors. Rich has an AB from Rutgers College, a MS from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from Miami University.

Speaker bio:
Priscila Néri was born in Brazil and raised in New York City. In August, she was hired by CDI to run the organization’s first office in the United States, which will focus on fundraising and networking for the entire CDI Network.

Ms. Néri comes from a background in media and activism. She worked as a reporter for leading Brazilian newspaper. O Estado de S.Paulo during four years, where she covered International Affairs, Economy and Politics.

She has also worked as a freelance journalist for Reuters, Wall Street Journal Americas, Carta Capital, and others, and produced six short documentaries.
In 2005, Ms. Néri studied film and went on a six-month expedition throughout the Sertão Nordestino, poorest region in Brazil, to shoot an independent feature documentary on the lives of seven women that defy the harshness of their surroundings. That project is now in post-production.
In addition to overseeing the US operations for CDI, Ms. Néri is currently pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts in Media for Social Activism at Hunter College.

DV Seminar: Bill Woodcock

Bill Woodcock entered the field of Internet routing research in 1989, while designing and operating an international multiprotocol service-provision backbone. In 1993-1994, Bill became one of the founders of Packet Clearing House (PCH), and has been responsible for the nonprofit institutionÕs routing data collection project since 1997. Since that time, he has directly participated in the establishment of over three dozen public Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Bill was a board member of the ISP/Consortium, 1998-1999, and is currently a Trustee of ARIN. As Research Director for PCH he is a current or former PCH representative to APIA, ARIN, APNIC, RIPE, CAIDA, NATOA and the ISP/C. Bill speaks regularly at AfNOG, APIA, APNIC, APRICOT, ARIN, ISOC/INET, NordNOG, RIPE, IEPG, IETF, ISMA and NANOG meetings. He currently serves on the program committees of NANOG, SANOG, PAM, and APRICOT.

Bill chaired the AppleTalk Tunneling Architectures working group of the AppleTalk Networking Forum from 1993-1994. In the course of 1995 projects for Oracle and the root DNS servers, he pioneered IGP and EGP-based topological load balancing techniques using IP Anycast technology. This research, first presented at Montreal IEPG (June, 1996), has provided the basis upon which all new root DNS servers have been deployed since the late 1990s. In addition to this protocol development work, Bill has worked with Cisco and Agilent on the specification and development of new networking hardware products. Bill was the principal lobbyist in the successful passage of California state anti-spam legislation in 1998. From 1996-1988, he was moderator of the Fidonet Network Administration echo. Mr. Woodcock has director roles in four companies in the areas of satellite communications, MP3 content distribution, WWW content news publishing, and domain name service provision.

Bill’s published work includes a number of PCH white-papers, the Multicast DNS, IP Anycast, and Operator Requirements of Infrastructure Management Methods IETF drafts, the McGraw-Hill book Networking the Macintosh, and the ANF AppleTalk Tunneling Architectures Working Group Report. He has published many articles in Network World, MacWorld, and MacWEEK.

Dr. Stanley Chia is Senior Director, Vodafone Group R&D-US. He has been with the mobile communications industry for over 20 years and has held senior positions in operation, technology, and strategy. Prior to joining Vodafone and its US predecessor AirTouch Communications, he worked for BT-Cellnet, now O2, British Telecom Laboratories, and SmarTone Mobile Communications (Hongkong). He is Senior Member of Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (US) and Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK).

Speaker Bio:
Darian Hickman, the founder of VillagetheGame.com, graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2001 with a BS in Computer Science. After a series of boring high-paying defense-contracting jobs and some volunteer work, Darian has finally started on a project he can call a life mission. This project is Village the Game.

Game Summary
Village is a multiplayer online real-time strategy game for the PC that immerses the player into the role of an entrepreneur building companies to bring prosperity to the villages of the third world.

Game Mission
The mission of Village is to let players practice building sustainable villages for developing nations using proven technologies and proven business models.

Speaker biography:

Lee H. Ng is a Business Director for New Business Creation at Agilent Technologies, Inc. She leverages past experience in manufacturing, consulting, and venture capital to assess new technologies and launch new business ventures. Currently, her focus is in creating new business for Agilent in developing markets like China.

As an internal consultant in HP before the Agilent split, she has worked with many divisions on manufacturing strategy, new product positioning, strategic planning and evaluation of strategic alliances for several internet businesses.

Before joining HP, Lee was a Project Manager at IBIS Associates and consulted to Fortune 500 companies. She also worked with Ampersand Ventures to assess the viability of new business ventures, start-ups, and spin-offs and was involved in deal screen, due diligence, technology, and market analysis
Lee holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at Austin, Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Engineering from M.I.T, with minors in Economics, Finance, and Strategy.

Jonathan was the PR manager for Sony Corporation in its heyday, representing the company’s far-flung ‘non-consumer’ business units – at the age of 25, he was acclaimed as one of the youngest managers in Sony corporate history. Sony products in the non-consumer area include professional audio/video equipment, computers, peripherals and semiconductors. As a key member of the headquarters corporate communications staff, his role included counseling top management, day-to-day product PR responsibility and control of a million dollar+ budget, all within a few years of graduating college.

Jonathan has gained the respect of leading media, analysts and peers for his in-depth technical knowledge as well as his marketing ability and industry contacts. Through his expertise, Horizon was awarded Agency of Record status at Apple, SGI and other Fortune 500 companies, as well as a host of startups. He has arranged Business Week and Forbes cover stories, as well as articles in leading business, consumer and high-tech venues.

He has been personally profiled in a number of publications for his renowned business acumen, unique style and involvement in charitable activities. Charly Kleissner, PhD (Technical Advisor) has over seventeen years of experience as a senior technology executive in Silicon Valley. He is currently a partner in the Acumen Fund, and serves as an advisor and a board member for multiple nonprofit and for-profit start-up companies. Charly and his wife Lisa co-founded KL Felicitas Foundation, a family foundation dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs worldwide. Until August 2001, Charly was Ariba’s Sr. VP of Product Solutions globally. Prior to Ariba, he was VP of Product Development at RightPoint, and held senior engineering management positions at NeXT Software, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Hewlett-Packard. Charly earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in distributed databases from the University of Technology, Vienna. He authored two software patents and published numerous articles. Dr. Kleissner teaches university level courses on leadership, management and organizational development. He has developed workshops for succesful social entrepeneurs which focus on sustainabiliy and scalability of global social enterprises.
